Meeting Your Match: First-Date Slips to Avoid

Have you wondered why first dates start out well but don’t get off the ground? Here is what to look out for – common errors men and women commit on their initial dates:

Don’t dress to kill

Don’t dress for the boudoir in revealing clothes – leave something to the imagination! By doing so you convey the wrong message –you’re not in the match for the long haul but just looking for a physical encounter.

Don’t flirt with wait staff
Don’t stare at the wait staff. A roving eye is off-putting in either sex. You are on a date – so focus on your prospective match. Nothing is more flattering than someone who responds with appreciation and their undivided attention.

Don’t flaunt your smart phone

Don’t let your cell phone be a distraction. Switch it to silent mode and keep it out of sight – calls can wait. Don’t create the impression that texting is more important than your potential match.

Don’t talk about your exes

This includes not just old flames and spouses but your former jobs too. Don’t depend on sob stories to gain attention and sympathy. Keep the conversation amusing and lighthearted. Try topics like holiday destinations, films, books and enjoyable hobbies.

Do your research

This date may be one in a series of people you are meeting through an online dating service and it can be confusing, but if you want the relationship to progress you have to get your facts right about the person. Print out and read through the profile of your match several times and add any notes about chat sessions and conversations you might have shared.

Finally, don’t act needy even if you do connect well on the first date. Demonstrate that you have a happy and complete life that will only get better with that special somebody. Dating can run a longish course - just focus on enjoying the process and take it as it goes.
